Journalism & Women Symposium (JAWS) Stands in Strong Support of Continuing Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Efforts
(GRANDVILLE, Mich. March 17, 2025) - For 40 years, we at the Journalism & Women Symposium have worked to advance and empower women in journalism to ensure inclusive coverage of the diverse experiences and cultures that comprise our society.
We’re deeply troubled by the recent firings and attacks on women, people of color and the trans community. We’re shocked at the rollbacks that have come after decades of work, including lawsuits, to make newsrooms more representative of the world at large. We reject the idea that the people being targeted are unqualified or undeserving of a place in our industry.
Today, more than ever, we remain committed to supporting women, press freedom and democracy as well as our vulnerable allies. We can’t have a free press if it isn’t representative and inclusive of all regardless of gender expression, religion, race, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation and class.
Even before the latest upheavals in the industry, women, young journalists and people of color historically made up a larger percentage of media layoffs, according to the Institute for Independent Journalists. Now, the fragile progress we’ve achieved over the course of decades is being trampled on by recent events. We refuse to watch passively from the sidelines.
To our colleagues who are being targeted, we stand with you. An attack on one of us is an attack on all. None of us can afford to remain silent.
Since 1985, the Journalism & Women Symposium (JAWS) has been for working journalists, journalism educators and researchers from across the United States. Members meet in person and online to share resources, support, training and information about the issues that affect women in the industry. JAWS advances the professional empowerment and personal growth of women in journalism and advocates for more inclusive coverage of the diverse experiences and cultures that comprise our society.
