JAWS Webinar: From federal to local, how to measure the impact of federal cuts on your community

FREE JAWS WEBINAR MAY 20: The impacts of cuts at the federal level are only beginning to be felt at the local level and will continue to affect real people from fired federal employees to people who just need a weather forecast. Health journalist Liz Seegert, NBC Data Editor Lucia Walinchus and Big Local News co-director Cheryl Phillips will share resources and story ideas.

Liz Seegert is an award-winning, independent journalist who has written about health for more than 30 years. Her primary beats currently include aging, social determinants of health, women’s health, and health policy. She’s the contributing editor on aging for the Association of Health Care Journalists, helping reporters better understand the topic’s many nuances. Her freelance work has appeared in dozens of national and local media outlets, including Fortune.com, The Wirecutter, TIME, Consumer Reports, Harvard Public Health, Medscape, and many more. Liz directs the JAWS health journalism fellowship, helping emerging journalists to cover health and medical issues, and also co-directs a journalist in aging fellowship in partnership with the Gerontological Society of America.

Lucia A. Walinchus is an award-winning journalist, attorney and ice hockey player/coach. She is currently managing data editor for NBC-owned stations. Walinchus has written more than 500 articles for various publications throughout her career and was named a 2016 Fulbright Berlin Capital Program Scholar. She has been featured as a guest speaker on CNN and was a contracted freelancer for the New York Times and the Washington Post. Her work has previously been recognized as the Best Investigative Reporting in Ohio, the Best Data Journalism in Ohio, and the Best Public Service Journalism. Walinchus has a degree in Journalism from American University and a Juris Doctorate from California Western School of Law.

Cheryl Phillips is the founder/co-director of Stanford University’s Big Local News, a data-sharing platform and computational collaborative in support of local journalism. She also is co-founder of the Stanford Open Policing Project, a cross-departmental effort to collect police interaction data and evaluate racial disparities. She is now part of the Community Law Enforcement Accountability Network, a national effort to collect, process and analyze police use of force and misconduct records. She teaches data and investigative journalism and has worked in numerous newsrooms, including The Seattle Times, USA TODAY, The Detroit News and newsrooms in Texas and Montana. During her time in Seattle, she twice covered breaking news that that received a Pulitzer Prize and twice worked on investigations that were Pulitzer finalists. Last year, Big Local News staff contributed to two Pulitzer finalist teams. Most recently, Phillips and Big Local News contributed to an investigation into overdose deaths in partnership with The Baltimore Banner and The New York Times Investigative Reporting Fellowship that received a George Polk Award for local reporting.
