IWMF & JAWS: Virtual safety training on hostile environments

The International Women's Media Foundation, in partnership with the Journalism & Women Symposium, is offering a virtual safety training on hostile environments in the U.S. Given the realities of the COVID-19 pandemic, the upcoming election and ongoing protests across the country, we know that this is a critical moment for the safety of journalists and we are excited to be able to offer journalists the resources and the skills to report safely. This training consists of six individual modules, each of about two hours in length. These sessions will take place between Sept. 21 and Oct. 9, depending on the availabilities of trainers and participants. Upon successful completion of the course, each participant will receive a “Hostile Environments Reporting” certificate from RPS Partnership, the IWMF’s safety training partner.

The modules are:

  • Risk Assessment + Planning

  • Protests, Political Rallies and Riots

  • Active Shooter + Shooting

  • First Aid

  • Digital Security

  • Natural Disasters and Reporting during COVID-19

Our program is designed for U.S.-based, women-identifying journalists with at least one year of full-time professional journalism experience.

The course will be specifically tailored to the safety concerns of reporters in the U.S  The IWMF & JAWS will select 30 journalists to participate in this training, prioritizing reporters who have not received prior security training, especially journalists from underrepresented backgrounds.
