Meet the CAMP Committee

The CAMP Committee is hard at work making CAMP 2019 an active and reflective weekend where women journalists can gather to make connections, gain skills and spark new projects. We hope you will meet them face to face in Williamsburg, Va. Sept. 20-22. Cited by The New York Times as one of the 52 Places to Go in 2019, Williamsburg provides the opportune backdrop for this year’s conference theme: “Facing Our Past, Defining Our Future.”

Mira Lowe

Mira Lowe, the president-elect of JAWS, is assistant dean for student experiences at the University of Florida, College of Journalism and Communications, where she serves as the team leader and facilitator for all administrators who oversee the college’s venues for professional immersion. She also is director of the Innovation News Center, a multimedia newsroom of student journalists and professionals that serves North Central Florida via multiple distribution channels, including PBS, NPR and ESPN.

Prior to joining UF, Mira was a senior editor at CNN Digital in Atlanta, managing the planning, execution and programming of daily features content and special projects across a global portfolio. She was editor-in-chief of JET magazine, the first woman to helm the publication, and assistant managing editor of Ebony magazine, both in Chicago, and an associate editor at Newsday in New York.

“My vision for CAMP is that attendees leave feeling inspired, renewed and better equipped to do their best journalism,” she says.

She spent a decade working in higher education as a professor and administrator, and now serves as the national leader of the Poynter Institute’s College Media Project, a program for which she developed the curriculum.

The Project trains student journalists across the country to create impactful, campus-based journalism projects that engage with their communities over critical and often contentious issues, building trust, accountability and media literacy along the way.

“I envision CAMP 2019 as an opportunity to listen, learn and grow together as a group focused on equity, support and understanding,” Yancy said. “As women in journalism, we can benefit from the wisdom of our JAWS family as we lift one another up to face serious challenges to our profession, our identities and in some cases, our very lives. CAMP is the place for lifting. For strengthening one another. For centering those most endangered among us and empowering them to persevere and flourish as an integral part of our past, present and future.”
