For 35 years, JAWS has been a unique sisterhood, fostering connections between women journalists and supporting them in the profession. It has served as a source of information and inspiration, a place for women to share, care and dare to be themselves.

Springing from a conversation by a small group of women in 1984 to its founding in 1985, JAWS has grown in size and scope, now reaching hundreds of members and supporters across various platforms – providing training, resources and an incredible network of women at all career stages.

As we honor the past we reflect on our mission, “JAWS supports the professional empowerment and personal growth of women in journalism and works toward a more accurate portrayal of the whole society,” and how it has guided our journey — challenging us to be there for each other and our communities. 

Looking ahead, let’s consider what is going to propel us forward for the next 35 years. What do we want the stories about JAWS to be? 

No doubt as our industry evolves – different business models will emerge, new technologies will surface, and ways to engage audiences will multiply. What can we do that ensures women journalists will be at the forefront of these changes to come? How might we support their leadership, entrepreneurship, expertise and brilliance? 

Advancing women is advancing journalism. And JAWS can lead the way.

Here’s to the fierceness of that reality.
