CAMP isn’t all business. There’s plenty of time to explore and meet friends new and old over the weekend.
Welcome bonfire
Get your witch hats and broomsticks and gather at our opening party—a bonfire with brews for purchase on Friday night.
Mentor time
Looking for someone to go to for career advice? Come chat with experienced industry leaders during roundtable mentorship discussions. Have a boatload of tips and tools you’re eager to share with other journalists? Volunteer to be a mentor and share your know-how with others. For JAWS fellows, this time is an opportunity to get to know your mentor match. To volunteer as a mentor, email Sarah Garrecht Gassen at .
Cocktail hours
Grab a drink and gab with friends before dinner each night. Saturday’s cocktail hour is Books & Browse, when eight authors will give lightning readings of their work, then be on hand to sell, sign and chat about their books.
Sunday activities
Take advantage of free time on Sunday afternoon and explore the beautiful Mt. Hood area.
You can venture out on your own, get a group together for a rendezvous or hop on the JAWS shuttle to Multnomah Falls, the historic Vista House and a local winery, Buddha Kat Winery.
The stunning Multnomah Falls are one of Oregon’s top tourist attractions, located about an hour from the CAMP hotel. Stroll up a paved path to a picturesque bridge for a closer look at the falls’ icy beauty. Or cozy up inside the Multnomah Falls Lodge, a National Historic Site at the base of the falls with a restaurant, snack bar and gift shop.
Another historic site, the Vista House, overlooks the scenic Columbia River Gorge. The observatory was built in 1917 to inspire and rejuvenate weary travelers, and boasts one of the best views of the gorge. Inside the domed building, run by a non-profit in partnership with Oregon State Parks, are educational exhibits and an espresso bar.
Buddha Kat Winery serves wines made from grapes from the Columbia and Willamette valleys, Columbia Gorge and surrounding orchards. The winery got its start when the owner packed up two fat cats and two kids and moved from Alaska to Oregon, and discovered a winery for sale. The main tasting room is in Sandy, about 20 minutes from the resort.
The shuttle will loop to the sites and back to the hotel, allowing you to get off and stop at one site or see a few!
