CAMP 2018: Kick off the weekend with a writing workshop and leadership symposium

CAMP 2018 will kick off with two action-inspiring workshops: a narrative storytelling session with Lisa Heyamoto and the first-ever JAWS Leadership Symposium.

Lessons in Longform: Deconstructing the Art of Narrative Storytelling for all Mediums

Friday, Oct. 12, 9 AM – 12 PM

The best longform stories involve more than just stunning words or images. They start with a marriage of compelling people and circumstances, continue through a structured storytelling process and end with a piece that illuminates something universal about the human condition.

This Lessons in Longform workshop aims to deconstruct the narrative process, sharpen your storytelling skills and provide a framework for crafting immersive, transcendent stories in a multimedia digital world.

Instructor Lisa Heyamoto is a narrative journalist and journalism educator whose research, teaching and creative work is focused on community-building through storytelling. Before joining the faculty at the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication, she was a columnist and reporter at The Sacramento Bee and The Seattle Times, where she wrote about lifestyle and culture.

Heyamoto cultivates the next generation of journalists by combining foundational skills with critical thinking and digital agility. She has won several teaching awards, including the Jonathan Marshall Award for Innovative Teaching and a Disruptive Educator Fellowship from the Tow-Knight Center for Entrepreneurial Journalism, and has been voted one of the best professors at UO. Heyamoto is a co-founder of The 32 Percent Project, which explores what drives and disrupts public trust in the news media. She holds a masters degree in literary nonfiction journalism and a bachelor’s degree in journalism and English.

2018 Inaugural JAWS Leadership Symposium

Friday, Oct. 12, 1 PM – 4:30 PM

2018 has been defined by women journalists leading a powerful movement against workplace intimidation and harassment in all its forms. At Journalism and Women Symposium (JAWS), we are all too familiar with the injustices that the #MeToo movement is bringing to the forefront of our cultural dialogue, and we’re ready to take action.

At CAMP 2018, JAWS will further the conversation by debuting a half-day Leadership Symposium for women.

Ready to have a conversation about where we go beyond the #MeToo movement? Join us for the symposium, which will feature a panel of women leaders discussing the challenges, obstacles, and triumphs they encountered on the path to newsroom management, and hands-on exercises that will help you find the confidence to overcome impostor syndrome and become a master negotiator.
