2018 Emerging Journalist Fellowship

Each year the Journalism and Women Symposium (JAWS) brings a Diversity fellow to our annual Conference and Mentoring Project (CAMP) for three days of training, networking and professional development. This year’s JAWS CAMP will be held at The Mount Hood Oregon Resort in Welches, Oregon Oct. 12-14, 2018.

What is CAMP?

The annual JAWS CAMP focuses on strengthening core journalism skills, building personal brands and careers and developing strategies for success in our evolving media landscape. Participants move toward improving gender parity in our profession, empowering women in leadership and management, and encouraging a more accurate portrayal of the whole society. Participants enjoy a dynamic weekend filled with inspiring speakers, motivating career development sessions as well as rewarding networking and mentoring opportunities. CAMP is an experience that has helped launch countless careers, and ignited lifelong friendships.

What is the Emerging Journalist Fellowship?

The fellowship offers a stipend that covers CAMP registration and travel expenses. Fellows also receive a one-year JAWS membership or renewal. Candidates are selected based on a combination of merit, financial need and their potential contribution to JAWS as an organization that supports diversity across race, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, media platform, beat and location.

What does the Emerging Journalist Fellowship entail?

Fellows will be asked to blog the weekend’s events for the JAWS website and to help JAWS’ fellowship fundraising campaign. Fellows will be asked to participate in and spread the word about our CrowdRise fellowship fundraising campaign throughout June and July. This year’s fellowships are financed in part by previous years’ of fellowship fundraising efforts. Fellows will also be asked to participate in promotional videos to help spread the word about CAMP and JAWS fellowships.

Who can apply?

Applicants should have at least one but no more than five years of professional journalism experience.

Professional journalism experience includes up to one full year of campus news publication/broadcast experience, paid and unpaid internship experience, as well as contract, freelance, part-time and full-time work.

Please note: The JAWS Emerging Journalist Fellowship is open to international journalists, but the stipend only covers domestic travel. the JAWS Emerging Journalist Fellowship is not open to undergraduate students. Graduate students may apply. We encourage undergraduates to become involved by joining JAWS at the student rate and attending JAWS events and regional gatherings.

How do I apply?

A one-page résumé
Two samples of your professional, published work in journalism (links or documents). All samples must be provided in English.
Brief descriptions of your submitted samples
A personal statement (no more than 500 words) – Why is an organization like JAWS important to you? What will you contribute to the group? Would you be able to attend CAMP without financial assistance from JAWS (elaborate)
One letter of recommendation from a current or previous editor, producer or supervisor in journalism. We would prefer to receive the recommendation letter attached with the rest of your application. However, if your recommender would rather email the letter directly to the fellowship committee (), please ask him/her to include your first and last name in the subject line.

The application deadline is 11:59 p.m. EDT May 18, 2018.
