CAMP 2017: Nikole Hannah-Jones, Lynn Sweet to keynote

By Marina Villeneuve, CAMP co-chair

This year at the Conference and Mentoring Project (CAMP), we’re celebrating the act of veering off the beaten path and speaking truth to power.

And in that vein, we are so excited to announce our two keynote speakers: Nikole Hannah-Jones, a domestic correspondent for The New York Times Magazine focusing on racial injustice, and Lynn Sweet, a columnist and Washington Bureau Chief at the Chicago Sun-Times.

Nikole is currently working on a book about the nation’s segregated schools and, for three years at ProPublica, explored how official policy created and maintained segregation in housing and schools. She is a founder of the Ida B. Wells Society, which formed in 2016 to increase the ranks of investigative journalists of color. She started her career covering race, class, school resegregation and equity for The News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C., and later covered beats like the census and county government for The Oregonian.

Lynn has covered politics and government from Chicago’s street brawls to the White House. She appears frequently on CNN, MSNBC, and Fox, where she offers keen insight on national politics and the Trump administration. Her first job was at the Independent-Register in Libertyville, Ill.  She was named by Washingtonian Magazine as one of the capital’s “50 Top Journalists” and is in the Chicago Journalism Hall of Fame and Northwestern University’s Hall of Achievement. Sweet currently is the president of the Gridiron Club and Foundation.

JAWS has been bringing powerful women to speak at CAMP every year since 1984. But that’s not all we do: CAMP offers professional development, training, inspiring speakers and an opportunity to support networking, mentoring and friendship among women in journalism.

So, join us at CAMP this year in Hot Springs, Ark., on Oct. 27-29, and meet Nikole, Lynn and dozens more vibrant, influential and fun women. Lynn will be speaking at the lunch keynote and Nikole will be speaking during the dinner keynote. Along with our keynotes, we have a great lineup of conference programming as well as pre-conference workshops on podcasting and leadership. For more information, visit and register at
