Journalism and Women Symposium is excited to welcome the 2016 fellowship recipients to the Conference and Mentoring Project (CAMP) in Roanoke, Va. Oct. 28 to Oct. 30.
Emerging Journalist Fellows
The Journalism and Women Symposium each year selects 10 women who are just starting careers in journalism as Emerging Journalist fellows. These fellows are brought to the annual JAWS Conference and Mentoring Project (CAMP), where they meet industry leaders and trailblazers, and have the opportunity to learn new skills and share their own. Emerging Journalist fellowships are open to professionals in the early stages of their careers. Winners were selected based on a combination of merit, financial need and their potential contribution to JAWS as an organization that supports diversity across race, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, media platform, beat and location. Fellowships cover CAMP registration and travel expenses. Fellows will blog the weekend’s events for the JAWS website and to help JAWS spread the word about our GoFundMe fellowship fundraising campaign throughout June and July. Fellows also receive a one-year JAWS membership or renewal.

Diversity Fellow
The Journalism and Women Symposium each year selects one journalist from a community traditionally underrepresented in the media, and whose work supports diversity. The Financial Times is generously underwriting the JAWS Diversity Fellowship. The fellowship stipend covers registration and travel expenses to the annual JAWS Conference and Mentoring Project (CAMP), where the fellow will meet industry leaders and trailblazers, and have the opportunity to learn new skills and share their own. The goal of the Diversity Fellowship is to help the practice of journalism better reflect society. This is an opportunity for journalists who are traditionally underrepresented in newsrooms, including but not limited to women of color, journalists in the LGBTQ community and those with disabilities. The fellow will blog the weekend’s events for the JAWS website and to help JAWS spread the word about our GoFundMe fellowship fundraising campaign throughout June and July.

Entrepreneurial Fellow
Each year the Journalism and Women Symposium (JAWS) brings an Entrepreneurial fellow to our annual Conference and Mentoring Project (CAMP) for three days of training, networking and professional development. The fellowship stipend covers registration and travel costs for the weekend. The goal of the Entrepreneurial Fellowship is to help a woman journalist move forward with an innovative journalism project. JAWS will help bring this entrepreneur to CAMP 2016, where she will have the opportunity to mine the JAWS brain trust and explore skills that will be useful for her proposed project. The fellowship covers CAMP registration and most travel expenses.

Next Step Fellow
Each year the Journalism and Women Symposium (JAWS) brings a Next Step fellow to our annual Conference and Mentoring Project (CAMP) for three days of training, networking and professional development. In the turbulent world of today’s journalism, women with established careers often need to explore new avenues for practicing their craft. This veteran journalist will participate in hands-on technical and social media workshops, individual mentoring and lots of informal brainstorming to figure out next steps and learn about new opportunities in the rapidly changing new media landscape. The Next Step fellowship stipend covers registration and travel costs for the weekend.
