Regional gatherings recap: December 2015

JAWS Bay Area: The group hosted a potluck on November 1 at Kat Rowland’s home in Oakland. There were about 10 attendees, including two new members. In addition to sharing great food, they swapped introductions, projects they’re working on and ways to get more women to the Conference and Mentoring Project (CAMP) in 2016.

JAWS also helped sponsor a Bay Area media party Dec. 17 in San Francisco. It brought together members of JAWS, AAJA-SF, BABJA, EWIP, Hacks/Hackers, IRE Bay Area, NAHJ Bay Area, NLGJA NorCal, ONA-SF, Pacific Media Workers Guild, San Francisco Peninsula Press Club, Solutions Journalism Network Bay Area and SPJ NorCal for food, drinks and festivities at the Cadillac Bar & Grill.

JAWS D.C.: JAWS D.C. had a wonderful holiday gathering. The food was great. There was also a fun White elephant gift exchange (everyone wanted the wine!) and left with special treats in the form of fantastic fake holiday tattoos. Special thanks to Lisa Gillespie for planning and opening her lovely home.

JAWS NYC: The group held a potluck on Oct. 28 and about 14 people came, including two potential new members. There was also a group that went to see the movie “Spotlight” and a joint holiday party with Women’s ENews.

JAWS SoCal: Janice Littlejohn hosted a pre-Thanksgiving potluck for the SoCal JAWS group. They watched the “Why JAWS?” and Legacy Committee videos, reflected on CAMP and shared a few recipe-related stories that could go in the JAWS cookbook.

JAWS South Florida: The group held a casual conversation with two women journo leaders from Florida. There were about 20 or so people who joined in. The Herald-Tribune newspaper donated a space for us, and attendees noshed on wine and snacks. People drove to the location from hours away – Orlando, Fort Myers, Naples, Tampa. The discussion was inspiring with topics such as salary negotiation, how to get into management, how to inspire your women journo peers, etc.
