I’m very pleased to announce that Aminda “Mindy” Marqués Gonzalez has joined the Journalism and Women Symposium Advisory Board.
Mindy is executive editor and vice president for news at The Miami Herald, the first Hispanic in that position. She started at the paper as an intern, proof to all you interns reading this that you can work your way up. I met Mindy when she interrupted her career at the Herald to serve as Miami bureau chief for People magazine, but she returned to the Herald in 2007 and served as multimedia editor, Sunday/Features editor and managing editor before being named to her current post.
A graduate of the University of Florida, Mindy serves on the boards of the Pulitzer Prize, the Associated Press Media Editors and the Poynter Institute’s advisory council. She was born in New York to Cuban immigrant parents and throughout her career has been a strong advocate for diversity in the newsroom. In a panel on women of influence at her alma mater last spring, she recalled that as a young reporter, “I didn’t dare to dream that I could have this job.”
Mindy joins Jill Geisler, Geneva Overholser, Diana Henriques and Lisa Stone on the JAWS Advisory Board. This is a great team of women working to support the JAWS mission, and they are an invaluable sounding board for me as president. If you have a chance, please thank them for their service to JAWS. To follow them on Twitter: Mindy, Jill, Geneva, Diana, Lisa.
And now a few quick reminders:
Recipes with a back story: Send your favorite food dish anecdote to Jane Marshall and Carol Guensburg for the 30th anniversary JAWS cookbook.
Authors: Come to CAMP for Books & Browse and let Chris Vachon know you’ll be there with your books.
Countdown: CAMP is closer than you think. The regular registration deadline is Sept. 15. Don’t miss out on the excellent program and on the chance to network with an outstanding group of women — all of you! Read more about CAMP in Gina Setser’s column.
See you in Montana!
