Ah, August. Summer vacation. Slow news days. A time to chill out before everything starts up again in September.

I wish.

This August finds me working long hours to ready the website of the new Al Jazeera America TV network in time for our launch this month. There is much work to do but it’s been wonderful to help build a new journalism website from the ground up.

Fortunately for me, most of my work as program chair for the 2013 Conference and Mentoring Project Oct. 25-27 in Vermont is done!

Instructions to help you create compelling data-driven stories from a veteran journalist with the Sunlight Foundation, a senior graphics designer at The New York Times and an expert Tableau Software? Check!

Inspiration from a James Beard Award winner on the elements of great food writing and inside information from a dairy-farming agriculture commissioner on how to cover food safety and security issues? Check!

Tips on working without a net when you have to be your own editor, honing your interviewing style, funding your dream journalism project and publishing your e-book? Check!

Thought-provoking panels examining the state of feminism 50 years after “The Feminine Mystique,” the best and worst advice for women in management and the best strategies if you’re currently looking for a job? Check!

And did I mention that New York Times Executive Editor Jill Abramson is our keynote speaker?

There’s a lot more on the program. Check out the entire schedule here.

So what are you waiting for? You can register online here.

See you at the The Essex, Vermont’s Culinary Resort & Spa, this fall!
